Security officers are the unsung heroes of many events, workplaces and properties. They are there to stop crime and often work unsocial hours and night shifts to keep everyone safe. Many security personnel work hard to create a safe space, requiring skill and training. You may wonder what skills and qualifications security officers need to work in these roles and be the best security guards they can be.
Here’s what it takes to become a security guard.
What are the different pathways?
There are two main ways you can become a security guard. This is either through an apprenticeship or an approved training course.
Apprenticeship
There are apprenticeships available to help you learn the skills of the jobs while earning money. You can apply for a Professional Security operative Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship to get into the role. Or you can do a Security First Line Manager Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship if you already have experience in security work. Both of these will take 1 to 2 years to complete and employers will set their own entry requirements for the course.
Other routes
To legally work as security personnel for many jobs you will need a front-line Security Industry Authority (SIA) license. Before applying for this you need to train for an approved ‘license-linked’ qualification so that employers can be sure you have the skills and knowledge to safely do the job. You will need various qualifications depending on the type of security work you intend to do. Such as:
– Guarding cash and valuables in transit
– CCTV operating
– Front line security
What skills do you need?
Some people have a natural talent for security work, while some skills can be taught. Not everyone is cut out for the job so it’s important to think about this beforehand. To be a good security guard you will need the following:
– Customer service skills to handle all types of people
– Patience and the ability to stay calm
– Knowledge of public safety
– Able to work well with others
– Pay attention to detail
– Accept criticism
– Concentration skills
– Ability to monitor your performance
